Our Insights...
Moving house is exciting but can also be a stressful and exhausting time.
But like most things in life, proper planning will help you avoid the hassle and relocate pain-free!
We’ve compiled this list of tips to get you on the right track.
Make a Plan
Get a headstart on your packing. By a head-start, we mean about two months. Map out your residence and allow a weekend per room for packing.
Start by packing the things you don’t use on a daily basis and get rid of the stuff you really don’t need. Have a garage sale or sell some things online. This will save you unnecessary packing and the extra cash won’t hurt, either.
Pack Wisely
Start collecting boxes before you begin packing. You may be able to pick them up free from a local supermarket otherwise they can be expensive to buy.
Use newspaper or bubble-wrap to cushion fragile things and seal bottle tops with tape to prevent the contents from leaking. Keep liquids packed separately from items which could be ruined if a bottle does leak.
Pack a suitcase of just what you will need on your first night so that you don’t have to go digging for essentials after an exhausting moving day.
Organise Your Moving Day
After selecting a moving date, it’s time to work out the logistics.
Will you hire removalists or hire a truck? How long will the task take, including travel time? Find out the cost of different options and make the necessary bookings well in advance.
If you have pets, make sure you have someone who can look after them while you’re busy on moving day.
Label Everything
Labels on your boxes should indicate which room’s belongings they contain and whether the content is fragile. It’s a good idea to label the sides of boxes so that you can identify them when they get stacked together.
If you have disassembled furniture, keep all the screws and parts together in labelled lunch bags or the like so you can easily put them back together later on.
Contact Energy Providers
You will unquestionably want lights and a hot shower at the end of your moving day. Make plans accordingly so that you’ll have your electricity and/or gas switched on by the time you reach your new home.
Change Your Address
Create a list of the organisations you will need to notify of your change of address.
Your list may include:
- Employer
- Service SA
- Banks
- Superannuation funds
- Insurers
- Mobile phone service providers
- Schools
- Doctors and dentists
- Clubs or memberships
You may want to redirect your mail, for a time. The Australia Post website is a great way to do that online.
