Meeting with an experienced financial adviser is the first part of the plan for your prosperity.

For a financial adviser to develop a plan properly tailored for you, it's important for them to know as much information about you as possible. To get the most out of your first appointment, we have put together a list of information you should bring along with you.

Your Objectives

Most important is making sure you have a clear idea of what you want. Sort out your goals into objectives that answer questions such as the following:

  • Why are you seeking advice? Are you saving for your children’s education, wanting to protect your family, planning for retirement or all of the above?
  • What is important to you? Do you want to leave a legacy for your family? Travel often? Spend more time with family?
  • Where do you want your family to be in the future and what does that look like? The more colour you can paint around you or your family’s future picture, the more successful you will be.

Write down these objectives and bring them with you!

Your Current Financial Position

A financial planner can't work with what you say, alone. Keep a few resources handy at your meeting. Documentation of the following will be crucial:

  • Income details
  • Current payslip
  • Pension or other Centrelink entitlements
  • Child support
  • Investment income (property, shares)
  • Expenditure details
  • Mortgage repayments or rent
  • Other loan repayments (investment, car)
  • Household expenses (Council rates, utilities, insurances)
  • Living expenses (food, entertainment, clothes, health insurance, car, medical)
  • Credit card repayments
  • Any other expenses (memberships, hobbies/sports, other insurances, additional super contributions)
  • Assets & Liabilities
  • Property (residential and investment)
  • House contents
  • Loan statements
  • Cars, caravans or boats
  • Bank accounts
  • Investments
  • Collectibles
  • Life insurance cash surrender value

It may seem like a lot of information, but it arms your financial expert with all of the data required to put the best possible plan in place.
